Can Juvederm Last Longer Than a Year?

What’s the one thing we all wish we could do? For many of us, we want to turn back the clock and recapture the youthful plushness of our skin. Fortunately, there are dozens of cosmetic treatments that can do just that, and at the top of the list are dermal fillers such as Juvederm. At Skin Craft by Sabrina Mercer in Houston, TX our vision is to help you craft your natural beauty with a commitment to art and science in skincare.

Can Juvederm Last Longer Than a Year?

Yes, it can! Many patients who use Juvederm are surprised to learn that this filler can last for a year or longer. This is exciting news for those who are looking for sustained or long-lasting results from cosmetic treatments. Fortunately, it seems like dermal fillers are getting better and more effective every year!

How Long Do Fillers Last on Average?

The life of dermal fillers once they have been applied varies from product to product. However, you can count on dermal fillers lasting longer than other cosmetic treatments, such as Botox, which lasts for about 3 to 4 months, or energy-based treatments which last for several weeks or months at a time.

On average, dermal fillers can last for 6 or more months. There are some dermal fillers that can last for more than 18 months, sometimes for as long as 2 years.

Why Might Results Last Longer?

Aside from the product being designed to last a long time, there are other reasons why the results of your dermal filler might last longer than anticipated. Some of these reasons include:

Placement

Placement of the filler matters. First, there are certain fillers that are formulated with specific textures that can only be applied to particular regions of the face, and this can affect how long the filler lasts simply because there is more or less tissue for the filler to work with.

Second, fillers that are placed in areas that have high amounts of movement, such as the mouth or the cheeks, may not last as long as fillers placed in different areas because the continual movement breaks the filler down more quickly.

Slow Absorption

Everybody has a different body and these different bodies all have slightly different rates of metabolic absorption. Fillers work by injecting skin-supporting proteins, lipids, and acids into the skin, which are then absorbed by the body over time.

Your natural rate of absorption is determined by your age, your lifestyle habits, your genetics, and even your gender.

Collagen Deposition

Collagen deposition is a byproduct of your body’s natural regenerative abilities. Dermal fillers that contain collagen or hyaluronic acid, which feeds collagen production, may sometimes cause collagen to settle in the skin as structural support.

Collagen deposition may cause dermal fillers to last for 2 years or more, which can be hugely beneficial to maintaining your desired appearance.

What Should You Do About Longer Than Expected Results?

Is it a bad thing if your dermal filler is producing results that are lasting longer than anticipated? Not really. There is no cause for concern when a dermal filler outlasts it’s expected results – in fact, many patients would rejoice at such a thing.

If you still enjoy the results or product still remains longer than expected, then there is no reason to do anything. However, some patients may seek to have the filler degraded if they want to improve a different aspect of their appearance.

How Often Should You Have Treatment?

The frequency at which you should have dermal fillers such as this one will vary from patient to patient. Depending on your desired results and your natural absorption rate, you may want to have regularly scheduled appointments to maintain results. Many patients opt to have annual filler appointments. We can help you decide how often you need this, or other, treatments.

Are There Ways to Extend Results?

Of course! Even if you have a faster absorption rate or the filler is placed in a high-expression area, there are plenty of ways you can extend the results of your treatment. Some simple ways to extend the results of your dermal filler include:

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated by drinking an adequate amount of water each day is key to skin health, and to making sure your dermal filler lasts as long as possible.

It’s recommended that adults drink at least 48oz of water or more every day to remain adequately hydrated. If you have an active lifestyle, you may need to drink more water. Dermal fillers work better when there is more moisture in the skin.

Moisturize

Another important component of skin health is to prioritize moisturizing. Moisturizing the skin helps fight against aging and skin damage, as well as balances the oil production in the skin.

The results of your dermal filler will look better and last longer when you moisturize regularly. The best time to moisturize is at night before bed and in the morning after washing your face but before wearing make-up.

Specialized Skincare Products

Using specialized skincare products can also make the results of your dermal filler last longer. In fact, many fillers can be paired with specific skincare systems that work with the active ingredients in the filler to accentuate and extend results.

The best example of this is using hyaluronic acid-based skincare products that reinforce the internal work of hyaluronic acid fillers. You can also use collagen-based systems or skincare products that are formulated with your exact skin type in mind. We can help you find products that work with your specific needs.

What Makes Juvederm Ultra Different?

At our clinic, we specialize in the use of Juvederm Ultra, which is a gel-like dermal filler that adds volume to the face and corrects skin laxity. Ultra is a favored dermal filler that uses a combination of hyaluronic acid gel and lidocaine to restore a youthful appearance, contour the face, and improve your overall beauty with natural-looking results.

What Does This Filler Treat?

Ultra is a versatile filler that can be used in many areas of the mid-to-lower face. For example, this filler can smooth lines and wrinkles from around the nose, mouth, and chin, as well as fill in lost volume in the cheeks, particularly beneath the cheekbones.

This filler is also regularly used to increase or restore volume in the lips, which can contour the shape of the lips as well as diminish verticle lines on the lips. Additionally, this filler is sometimes used on the hands to smooth away wrinkles.

What Are the Other Products in This Collection?

Juvederm is a family of products that all use slightly different variations of hyaluronic acid-based fillers to treat individual areas of the face. The key to this collection and its successful rewinding of the clock is the variations in textures between each injectable gel. The other products in this collection include:

Voluma

Voluma is a filler that is designed to plump the cheeks and correct skin laxity caused by aging. Voluma can be injected into the cheeks to restore lost volume, smooth away wrinkles, and fill the hollows of the cheeks. This filler also increases the volume of the skin to contour the cheekbone area to an ideal shape.

Vollure

Vollure is an exceptionally versatile filler that can be used virtually anywhere on the face. Although Vollure is primarily used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth, this filler is sometimes used to smooth wrinkles between the eyebrows or on the forehead.

If you are interested in using Vollure in locations other than the nose or mouth, please let us know so we can explore your options.

Volbella

Volbella is a dermal filler that is primarily used on the lips to restore volume, contour the shape of the lips, and diminish the appearance of verticle lip lines or “lipstick” lines that can form on the lips.

Unlike other fillers in this collection, Volbella is solely for restoring or correcting the lips, particularly the volume and shape of the mouth.

Why Should You Use This Filler?

There are many reasons why patients are interested in using Ultra or other products in this collection. Aside from being a corrective anti-aging treatment, this filler can also be used as a preventative measure in younger women who want to be proactive about preventing the formation of wrinkles.

Dermal fillers such as this one are commonly used to contour the shape of the face, particularly the cheeks and the lips, to reach a specific beauty ideal. But dermal fillers have other benefits, as well.

For example, using a dermal filler can make the application of make-up and the use of skincare products much easier. Dermal fillers can help you feel more confident, boost your self-esteem, and give you the ability to be satisfied with your overall appearance.

Can Dermal Fillers Be Combined With Other Treatments?

It’s very common to combine dermal fillers with other cosmetic treatments. In fact, we sometimes recommend that patients include dermal fillers as part of their treatment plan to create a more cohesive restored appearance.

The key to combining cosmetic treatments is to make sure you are treating different areas; while dermal fillers treat the inside of the skin, treatments that are compatible with fillers typically treat the outside of the skin. Some other treatments that are commonly used with dermal fillers include:

Chemical Peels and Facials

Treating the surface of the skin is just as important as treating the inside. While dermal fillers might restore lost volume, chemical peels and other facials can correct superficial skin concerns such as uneven skin one, rough skin texture, dry skin, dark spots, acne, and acne scarring.

Neurotoxins

Neurotoxins are injectable treatments that slow the response of the facial muscles, which smooth wrinkles and prevent new wrinkles from forming. The best-known neurotoxin treatment is Botox, which is used primarily on the forehead and between the eyebrows.

Because dermal fillers are rarely used on the upper portion of the face, neurotoxin treatments are commonly used to correct wrinkles in this region.

Energy-Based Treatments

Laser skin resurfacing or skin tightening treatments can also be used with dermal fillers such as this one. Energy-based treatments work gradually over time to correct superficial skin concerns over time for long-lasting results.

-Some skin concerns that can be corrected with energy-based treatments include skin laxity, melasma, dark spots, rosacea, sun damage, uneven skin tone, acne, acne scars, and other scarring or blemishes.

Who Are Good Candidates?

Dermal fillers are treatments that are compatible with the vast majority of patients. Candidates for dermal fillers include anyone who is not completely satisfied with the appearance of their skin. Candidates for this treatment include those who want to:

  • Restore skin volume
  • Correct fine lines and wrinkles
  • Contour lips and cheeks
